What does ATOL protection cover?
Checked October 2026
ATOL is the UK scheme that protects flights and flight-inclusive holidays sold by an ATOL holder. It does not cover every part of every trip. Without an ATOL Certificate, a booking is not covered. Check that every part of your trip is listed on the certificate. Anything not listed is not protected.
This page explains the scheme in plain words. It is not the CAA's wording, and it is not legal advice. The CAA's own statement is at the foot of every page. Read that, and the CAA's site at caa.co.uk, for the exact terms.
Two sources sit behind it, both read on 15 October 2026: one seller's financial-protection page, the tour operator Egypt Escapes' financial protection page, and the ATOL Regulations 2012, regulation 16.
What is an ATOL Certificate?
It's the document that lists what the scheme covers on your booking. One seller's financial-protection page says that, without a certificate, a booking has no ATOL protection. So ask when you'll get yours, and read it before you travel.
What does ATOL protection not cover?
One seller's financial-protection page says the protection does not apply to all holiday and travel services. Parts of a trip not listed on your certificate are not protected.
A certificate can list your flights and leave out another part. Check each part against the list.
Is a river cruise on its own covered?
It depends on how the holiday is built. A cruise fare on its own differs from a holiday with flights.
So don't assume. Ask for the certificate and read what it lists. The JLT Group, who book your trip, set out their ATOL details in the footer.
How do I check my protection?
Do three things.
- Ask whether you'll get an ATOL Certificate, and when.
- Check that each part of your trip is listed on it.
- Read the CAA's own guidance on caa.co.uk.
That seller's page points to the CAA's website for the full terms.
What the law says about claiming ATOL
Regulation 16 bars anyone from indicating that they hold an ATOL when they do not. It also requires disclosure of the capacity in which flight accommodation is made available.
That's why this site says plainly who does what. Our travel team at The JLT Group plans and books your trip, and The JLT Group's ATOL details sit at the foot of this page.
Ask before you pay
- Who holds the ATOL for my holiday?
- Will I get an ATOL Certificate, and when?
- Is every part of my trip listed on it?
- Which parts, if any, are not?
Get the answers in writing. Then use the form below to tell us about the holiday you have in mind. Our travel team at The JLT Group plans and books the cruise.
