Mobility and access

Checked October 2026

It depends on the ship, the gangway and the excursion. Get the answers in writing before you pay. AmaWaterways' FAQ says its ships are not equipped with facilities for guests with limited mobility. The tour operator Egypt Escapes' vessel pages give no lift or access details for any ship.

This page draws on two AmaWaterways pages and the tour operator Egypt Escapes' vessel pages. All were read on 15 October 2026. Each is a seller describing its own ships.

Do river ships have lifts?

Ask for the named ship, in writing. Egypt Escapes' vessel pages state no lift or access information for any ship. The only way to know is to ask.

How steep are gangways?

Some embarkation points may not suit guests with mobility issues. So says the AmaWaterways first-time cruiser FAQ. Its transfer vehicles are not wheelchair-accessible either.

So the way onto the ship is a separate question from the ship itself. Ask about both. Ask what the gangway is like at each stop.

Are Nile ships accessible?

Ask before you assume. AmaWaterways' Egypt guidance does not recommend its Nile itineraries for guests who need mobility aids. Crew cannot help with personal tasks, it says, so a companion is needed. Some docking means walking through adjacent ships or narrow gangways.

Egypt Escapes gives no lift or access information for its ships, as above.

What are excursions like for slower walkers?

The FAQ groups excursions into three walking levels. A gentle walkers option adds more frequent stops.

Gentle means a slower pace. It does not mean step-free. So ask what the route involves: steps, cobbles and how long you stand.

The line also keeps a limited number of canes and Nordic walking sticks on board. Ask whether your ship does, and whether you can reserve one.

Why the answer is in writing

A spoken answer is hard to check later. A written one names the ship, the date and who gave it. You can read it again before you pay.

Written answers also let you compare. Two sellers may use the same words and mean different things. Put the same six questions to each, then set the answers side by side.

What should I ask in writing?

Name the ship and the dates you want, then ask:

  • Is there a lift, and which decks does it serve?
  • What are the gangways like at each stop?
  • Can the crew help with anything personal, or do I need a companion?
  • What are the transfer vehicles?
  • What walking level is each excursion?
  • Which stops involve walking through other ships?

Our page of questions to ask before booking has the wider list.

Ask our travel team for the answers

The form doesn't ask for health details. Ask our travel team for the answers above in writing, for the named ship.
