How long is a Nile cruise?
Checked October 2026
Seven nights is the usual length on one seller's list: the tour operator Egypt Escapes' Nile cruise holidays are mostly seven nights, full board. Some add hotel nights in Cairo, on the Red Sea or in Luxor. Its dahabiya example runs eight days. So compare the nights on the water with the nights on land.
These lengths are what two sellers list, read on 15 October 2026. Your own sailing may differ.
How many days do you need for a Nile River cruise?
Plan around a week. The tour operator Egypt Escapes' cruise-and-stay page lists mostly seven-night cruises, full board. That means meals are covered, as our page on what is included in a Nile cruise explains.
Some of its holidays add hotel nights around the cruise, in Cairo, on the Red Sea or in Luxor. So a holiday that sounds like a week on the Nile can run longer.
Its dahabiya example runs eight days, boarding every Monday. Our page on dahabiyas and larger ships covers how those boats differ.
How long is a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan?
The ship and the direction you sail set it. Our page on a Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan has the sightseeing sets sold with those sailings.
Do you see pyramids on a Nile cruise?
Not in the sightseeing sets Egypt Escapes lists for its Nile sailings. Add Cairo hotel nights if you want to see them. Our page on a Nile cruise and Cairo sets out the options.
What changes the number of days?
Hotel nights change it. Egypt Escapes adds Cairo, Red Sea or Luxor nights to some of its cruise holidays.
Internal flights change it too. AmaWaterways builds its Nile programme, Secrets of Egypt and the Nile, from Cairo. AmaWaterways' visa service treats Day 1 as arrival in Cairo, per its Egypt guidance. Internal flights then link Cairo and Luxor, and bring you back to Cairo.
So a programme that starts in Cairo is longer than the time spent afloat. Day 1 there is an arrival day, not a day on the river. A day count on one seller's page can include travel days that another seller's page leaves out.
Two sellers can both say "a Nile cruise" and mean different things. One may describe the cruise alone. Another may describe the whole programme from arrival in Cairo.
How to compare lengths
Put the holidays side by side and ask the same questions of each.
- How many nights are on the ship?
- How many nights are in a hotel, and where?
- Where does the programme start, and where does it end?
- Which days are travel days with flights?
- Is every meal on the ship included?
A longer holiday is not better by default. It may include more hotel nights. A shorter one may cover the same river in fewer days.
Hotel nights and flights add to the cost, too. Our guide to Nile river cruise prices lists what to compare.
Get the whole programme
Ask for the day-by-day programme, from the day you leave home to the day you return. Check that the nights on the ship add up to the number you expected.
