Is a Nile cruise safe?

Checked October 2026

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) "advises against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions". It also says: "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt." Its main Egypt page was updated on 4 August 2026. Read it before you book and again before you travel.

Everything below is the FCDO's Egypt advice on gov.uk, read on 15 October 2026. Quotation marks mark the FCDO's own words. The FCDO's main Egypt page was updated on 4 August 2026. It was still current on 15 October 2026. Read the live pages before you book and again before you travel.

How safe is it to travel to Egypt?

Go by the FCDO. Its advice covers the regions, the terrorism risk, Nile cruises and insurance. The sections below set out each part, as the FCDO words it.

Which parts of Egypt does the FCDO advise against?

"FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the area west of the Nile Valley and Nile Delta regions"

That is from the FCDO's regional risks page. It gives the reason as risks from criminal activity and military operations.

The FCDO lists exceptions to that advice. Luxor, Qina, the Valley of the Kings, Aswan and Abu Simbel are among them. It lists other places too, including Faiyum and some coastal areas.

The regional risks page shows no date of its own. We date it by the main Egypt page, updated on 4 August 2026.

What does the FCDO say about terrorism?

On its safety and security page, the FCDO says:

"Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Egypt."

It adds:

"Terrorist attacks could be indiscriminate including in places visited by foreign nationals."

The same page says:

"Extra measures are in place at tourist sites."

It also says:

"Be cautious in tourist areas, where scammers and touts sometimes target foreign nationals."

What does the FCDO say about Nile cruises?

Nile cruises get their own line on that page.

"Overcrowding and poor safety standards have caused accidents on Red Sea ferries and Nile cruises."

We add no comment to it.

Health and medical help

The FCDO's health page gives 123 as the number to call for an ambulance. It keeps a list of medical providers in Egypt where some staff speak English. It says to confirm that your cover includes local treatment and medical evacuation.

One operator adds a point of its own. AmaWaterways' Egypt guidance says there is no doctor or nurse aboard its Nile ships. That applies to that operator only.

What this means for booking

Check your insurance before you pay a deposit. The FCDO's warnings and insurance page, last updated on 4 August 2026, says:

"Your travel insurance could be invalidated if you travel against advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office"

If you travel, it says to get appropriate insurance. That insurance should cover:

"your itinerary, planned activities and expenses in an emergency"

Then read the advice again before you travel. The main Egypt page shows when it was last updated.

What if the advice changes after I book?

What happens to your booking is a question for our travel team. Ask it in writing before you pay. It's on our list of questions to ask before booking a river cruise.

The weather is a separate question. Our page on the best time for a Nile cruise covers it.
