The timetable below is one seller's published itinerary, the tour operator Egypt Escapes' sample week, read on 20 October 2026. It's an example, not a promise for any ship. The heat counts are our own, from past Luxor and Aswan records on our press and data page.
What time does the day start on a Nile cruise?
Early, on most sightseeing days. In that sample week, the visits to Karnak and Luxor Temple, and to the High Dam and Philae at Aswan, are early-morning trips. The optional Abu Simbel trip leaves Aswan by coach at 05:00.
The lines say less about times. Viking's Nile page says its Luxor balloon ride starts early, with a boxed breakfast.
So ask what time each day's first visit starts, for your sailing.
When does the ship sail?
Between visits. On the sample week, the ship sails from about noon on one day, from about 9am on another, and arrives at Aswan around 9pm. The legs run from about 3 to 7 hours. Our page on the Luxor to Aswan cruise goes through where the ship spends each night.
Is there free time on a Nile cruise?
Some. The same sample week has an afternoon at leisure at Aswan. Anyone who skips the Abu Simbel trip gets a quiet morning on the sun deck. There's time to relax on deck while the ship sails, too.
What happens on board between visits?
That depends on the ship. AmaWaterways' page for AmaDahlia, one of its Nile ships, lists a daily cocktail hour, a pool, evening entertainment, and excursions led by Egyptologists in every port.
Viking says its Egypt fare includes an excursion in almost every port of call, with others you can add.
Ask what's on board for your ship, and which visits are in the fare.
How hot is it in the middle of the day?
It depends on the month. From December to February, under 1 day in 100 has passed 35°C at Luxor, in our counts of past records. In October, 45 days in 100 did. From May to September, most days at Luxor and Aswan have passed 35°C.
None of the line pages we read says how the day is shaped around the midday heat. So ask what time the excursions start in your month, and how long you'll be outside. Our page on the best time for a Nile cruise has every month.
Questions to ask about the days
- What time does each day's first visit start?
- Which days does the ship sail, and for how long?
- Which afternoons are free?
- How long is each visit on foot, and how much of it is outdoors?
- What's on board when the ship is moored?
